email The pollution we create is, of course, contributing to the downfall of our oceans.

Worldwide, pipeline and vessel spills are blamed for the release of 32.5 million gallons of oil into the oceans each year.

However, the National Research Council, an arm of the National Academy of Sciences, surprisingly reported that runoff from land sources account for 41 million gallons of pollution, and international operational discharges from vessels, such as from cargo washing, produced another 78 million gallons. In other words, the vast majority of petroleum pollution comes from every day activity, not the ships that carry the oil.

To top it off, the global human birthrate is steadily increasing by more than 95 million annually, and according to one estimate, by the year 2020, more than seventy-five percent of us will be living within forty miles of a coastline, so it's obvious that the pressures on our water planet will most certainly escalate.
